Hormonal Summer Skin: What does it need and why?

Navigating your skin through this transformative phase:
During the summer months I find that patients I see in clinic often neglect applying moisturiser after cleansing and before SPF for fear of clogging the skin and encouraging breakouts.

Navigating the changes that hormonal fluctuations bring to your skin especially during peri-menopause and menopause requires a skincare routine that meets your needs. I advocate for a comprehensive approach that includes both SPF protection and a moisturiser to support your skin.

Understanding SPF: Shielding your skin from harmful rays
SPF (Sun Protection Factor) is crucial for all skin types, especially for hormonal, peri menopausal and menopausal skin. During this period, fluctuating hormone levels can make your skin more susceptible to UV damage, leading to accelerated aging and increased sensitivity. Opting for a broad-spectrum SPF with a minimum rating of SPF30 ensures protection against both UVA (Ageing) and UVB (Burning) rays, safeguarding your skin from premature aging and potential sun damage.

Why Moisturiser Matters: Nourishing and protecting your skin barrier
Moisturisers play a vital role in maintaining skin health, particularly for hormonal, peri-menopausal and menopausal skin that tends to be drier and more sensitive. Made of More’s Brightening Day Shield is formulated with ingredients like Hemp Seed Oil and CBG (Cannabigerol), specifically chosen to hydrate, soothe, and fortify the skin barrier.

Hemp Seed Oil, rich in omega fatty acids, supports barrier repair and helps to calm inflammation, addressing common concerns such as dryness and redness. CBG, known for its antioxidant properties, aids in balancing sebum production and protecting against environmental stressors that can exacerbate hormonal skin issues.

Ingredients Spotlight: Made of More’s heroes supporting hormonal skin in the summer

Hemp Seed Oil: Provides essential hydration and supports barrier function, crucial for maintaining skin integrity.

CBG (Cannabigerol):  Acts as a powerful antioxidant, reducing inflammation and regulating oil production to promote balanced, healthy skin.

Light-diffusing Particles: Enhance skin radiance and protect against blue light and
temperature fluctuations, common triggers for hormonal skin concerns.

3-Step Summer Skincare Routine
1. Cleanse: Begin with Made of More’s Clarity Cleansing Balm; a gentle balm that removes impurities without stripping essential oils.

2. Moisturise: Apply Made of More’s Brightening Day Shield liberally after cleansing. Its lightweight, hydrating formula absorbs quickly, providing a smooth base for makeup and SPF while nourishing the skin throughout the day.

3. Protect: Finish your routine with a mineral-based SPF30/50 to shield your skin from UV rays. Mineral SPFs are gentle on sensitive skin and offer effective broad-spectrum protection against sun damage.

*Additional tip!* Don’t forget you to use Made of More’s Salvation Rescue Balm on any areas that have caught the sun or are feeling particularly inflamed/ dehydrated. As Jackie calls it, this Pocket Rocket is a total summer SOS!

I was a barrister for 20 years and took on a major career pivot as a result of feeling sick of being sick! I’d had a busy but stressful career, an obsession with endurance sports and a love of margaritas (I never know when to go to bed) but modern life takes its toll. I got sick a lot - chest infections, strep throats and constant bugs - and I managed my health with antibiotics and steroids.
