It’s important to understand what exactly the term microbiome refers to. The microbiome refers to the collection of microorganisms (like bacteria, fungi, viruses, and other microbes) that live in and on our bodies. These microorganisms play a crucial role in maintaining health and are found in various parts of the body, including the gut, skin, mouth, reproductive system as well as the vagina and vulva.
