Where Calm Meets Power

Why Pair Anti-Inflammatory CBG with Your Retinol Routine?

If you’ve ever used retinol, you’ll know it can be both a skin saviour and a skin stressor. While retinoids (like retinol and retinal) are gold-standard ingredients for anti-aging, known to boost collagen, smooth texture, and speeding up cell turnover, they’re also notorious for causing redness, peeling, dryness, and the dreaded “purge” period.

That’s where CBD and CBG (the parent cannabidoid) come in, especially useful in midlife, as skin becomes more prone to disruption due to losing it's natural protection.

2022 clinical study (Few et al., Aesthetic Surgery Journal)
A comparative study of patients using retinol vs retinol paired with water-soluble CBD treatment over 42 days.

CBG is clinically shown to calm inflammation, reducing oxidative stress.

Retinol works by speeding up skin cell turnover. But that stimulation often leads to inflammation, especially in the early weeks of use and when the skin's barrier is compromised. CBG, on the other hand, has well-documented anti-inflammatory properties. In this 2022 clinical study by Few et al., Retinol was paired with CBG and compared to retinol use alone - 100% of participants reported little to no irritation throughout the 6-week trial, even as their skin quality improved across 13 domains (including static and dynamic wrinkles, dehydration, and roughness). CBG’s soothing effect made the powerful retinol treatment more tolerable and effective.

Paradoxically, retinol use can weaken the skin’s own antioxidant defences - leaving it more vulnerable to damage from pollution, UV exposure, and free radicals. CBD and CBG helps restore that balance. It activates protective genes like HMOX1, helping neutralise oxidative stress and support skin resilience. In essence, while retinol stimulates repair, CBG shields the skin from the collateral damage.

In this study, CBG improved the results from retinol, without causing 'the purge' or inflammation.

Retinol purging (a period where breakouts temporarily worsen before improving) is a key reason many people give up on retinoids. But by reducing inflammation and maintaining skin barrier function, CBG helps minimise or even prevent this effect. In the study, patients not only saw improved tone and texture, but also reported higher satisfaction and greater likelihood of continuing use.

Retinol can lead to dryness and flaking. In contrast, CBG was shown to significantly improve hydration. In fact, every participant in the trial who began with “severe” dehydration ended with “none.” This boost in moisture helps maintain skin barrier integrity and reduces the likelihood of irritation, making it easier to stick with a long-term routine.

Key Results from the study found:

Dehydration reduced to zero in all severe cases
Major improvements in wrinkles, texture, and skin tone
